What to visit?
Zarnesti is a city with population around 26.000 people situated at an altitude of approx. 722 m (downtown), attested in 1373.
It is located in the depression section Zarnesti-Baraolt, at the foot of National Park Piatra Craiului, it is a good start point for climbing and hiking routes in the massif.
1. The Libearty bear sanctuary
In Romania, there are approximately 5 000 brown bears living in the Carpathian Mountains, almost half of Europe’s brown bears population. Romania still owns the best preserved habitats for big carnivores, places where humans didn’t interfere in the wild life affecting the ecosystem.
The bear reservation from Zarnesti was founded in 2005 in the memory of Maya, a female bear that died in captivity, enduring bad treatments from her keepers. Now there are 72 bears in Zarnesti reservation, each of them brought from captivity to start a new, better life. The main goal of this project is saving abused bears from captivity and offering them a new home in the middle of the nature.
The land for the sanctuary, 160 acres (70 hectares) of oak and hazel forest, was donated by the Municipality of Zarnesti.
Schedule is Tuesday to Sunday from 10, 11 and 12 o’clock.

2. Zarnestilor Abyss
The Zarnestilor Abyss is a 4 km long canyon located in the north-eastern Massif. The easiest to get is from the Cabana Zarnesti mouth.
Bordering the valley walls have a height ranging between 100 and 200 m trail through the abyss impresses with spectacular rock walls that climbers have opened many alpine routes. Great view can be admired from afar in the localities Zarnesti Cave.
3. Parcul National Piatra Craiului
The park is located in the Carpathians including all Stone Ridge Mountains and adjacent intermountain areas of lanes, Bran-Rucăr and Rucăr-Zarnesti.
Massif nature reserve was established on March 28, 1938, by decision of the Council of Ministers, followed over time to increase the area in several stages, and in 1990 the area was declared a national park.
The purpose of the designation as National Park Massif is to ensure the conservation of biodiversity and landscape, valuable species, promoting and encouraging tourism, public awareness and education in the spirit of protecting nature and its values.
4. Plaiul Foii Resort
The area is situated at the foot Piatra Craiului Massif, from the exit of Zarnesti, a distance of 12 km. The massif consists mainly of Mesozoic limestones and conglomerates. Across the Piatra Craiului arc are identified over 200 caves and potholes.
Still enjoys the purity of nature, resort Plaiul Foii preserving unaltered over time, unlike other resorts already established in our country.
Whether the intentions are to climb the mountain or whether simply wants tourists to admire the scenery on the river, Plaiul Foii is an excellent holiday destination, the fatigue and stress disappear as if by miracle.
